The NAU Honors Writing Center exists to tutor, encourage, and support our students in all of their non-technical writing, and to support the Honors faculty as they work to guide students toward Honors-level academic writing and critical thinking. We are not an editing service (meaning, we do not focus on editing or "correcting" papers). Rather, we are here to help students consider their own writing more carefully and critically through discourse and collaborative exploration of students' writing and the writing process.
Writing Center tutors are peer tutors; this means they are fellow honors students who have been through many of the same classes, but this does not make them experts. Their experience and training gives them a different perspective on work and assignments. This perspective can be very beneficial to discuss on writing work; however, the work is not theirs, and the decisions around what changes to make and how to make them remain with the writer.
In addition to being a writing center, we want to be here to support students in various capacities, so you will be able to make appointments with your Peer Mentors to meet with them through us as well.
We plan to have tutors present that focus on areas outside of writing (e.g. mathematics and chemistry) at specific times during the week; this service will be provided through the ASC (Academic Success Center) on campus, but the tutors will be housed here in the HWC when they are available, and you will be able to make appointments to see them through us as well. We will have more information on schedules and appointments as that service becomes available.
